Tanga Airport (TGT)

Tanga Airport (TGT/HTTG) is a small but strategically important domestic airport located in Mwanzange ward of Tanga City Council in Tanga Region, Tanzania. Situated 3 kilometers west of Tanga city center off the A14 trunk road, the airport operates at coordinates -5.09°S, 39.07°E with an elevation of 129 feet above sea level. The facility covers 384.589 hectares and serves as a vital aviation gateway for Tanzania's northern coastal region, connecting the historic port city of Tanga to major domestic destinations across the country. The airport infrastructure includes dual runway configurations to accommodate various aircraft types and weather conditions. The primary paved runway 06/24 measures 1,268 meters in length and 30 meters in width, constructed of asphalt suitable for small to medium-sized aircraft including Fokker Friendship types 27, 28, and 50. Additionally, the airport maintains a grass runway 14/32 measuring 1,285 meters long and 40 meters wide, providing operational flexibility during maintenance periods or varying wind conditions. Passenger traffic has grown substantially from approximately 1,000 passengers in 1999 to over 21,000 by 2013, reflecting the airport's increasing importance in Tanzania's domestic aviation network. The facility also handles cargo operations, which commenced in 2005 and peaked at over 45 tonnes in 2009. Tanga Airport primarily serves domestic scheduled passenger flights operated by small regional carriers using light propeller aircraft suited to the airport's infrastructure. Key destinations include daily or multiple-weekly flights to Dar es Salaam (198 km, 45 minutes), Zanzibar archipelago including Unguja and Pemba islands (126 km, 30 minutes), and connections to Arusha.
