Târgu Mureș Transilvania International Airport (Romanian: Aeroportul Transilvania Târgu Mureș) is a modern international airport serving the city of Târgu Mureș in Mureș County, central Romania. Located 14 kilometers southwest of the city center at an elevation of 294 meters above sea level, the airport operates under ICAO code LRTM and covers an area of 78 hectares. Positioned at coordinates 24°24'51'' east longitude and 46°28'04'' north latitude, this facility serves as an important regional gateway for Transylvania and central Romania. The airport features a substantially upgraded runway system that reflects decades of strategic development and modernization. Originally constructed in 1969 with a concrete runway measuring 1,325 by 30 meters, the facility underwent significant expansion in 1978 when the runway was extended to 2,000 by 45 meters (30 + 15 meters shoulder). The most recent major upgrade was completed in June 2018, when a completely renovated runway became operational with enhanced carrying capacity rated at 70 units, enabling operations for medium-sized aircraft and significantly improving the airport's operational capabilities. The passenger terminal complex represents a significant investment in modern aviation infrastructure, encompassing 4,182 square meters of operational space designed to provide efficient passenger processing and comfortable amenities. The terminal features seven check-in desks strategically positioned to handle peak period operations, with capacity to process up to 400 passengers per peak hour. The facility is designed to accommodate up to 800,000 passengers annually, reflecting its role as a significant regional airport serving central Romania and the broader Transylvania region. Passenger amenities within the terminal building include comprehensive services expected at an international facility, featuring currency exchange services, conveniently located ATMs, car rental counters from major international providers, and duty-free shopping opportunities for international travelers. The airport provides parking facilities for 180 vehicles, ensuring convenient access for passengers and visitors. Additional services include comfortable waiting areas, dining options, and modern passenger information systems throughout the terminal. The airport underwent a transformative RON 77 million modernization project completed in June 2018, bringing the facility up to contemporary international standards and significantly enhancing its operational capacity.
