Maramureș International Airport (BAY) is the primary aviation hub serving the historic Maramureș region of northern Romania. Located 10 kilometers west of Baia Mare, the airport is currently undergoing a massive RON 300 million (EUR 60 million) modernization project funded by the European Union. This ambitious redevelopment includes the construction of a brand-new 12,000-square-meter terminal building, expected to be fully operational by late 2025. The new two-level terminal is a state-of-the-art facility designed to handle a throughput of 450 passengers per hour. A significant upgrade includes the installation of a climate-controlled passenger boarding tunnel, providing a comfortable transition to the aircraft even during the region’s snowy winters. The airfield has also been enhanced with four new aircraft parking positions capable of self-maneuvering, allowing for the simultaneous service of multiple large commercial jets. The airport provides essential connectivity for northern Romania through scheduled and seasonal services. TAROM maintains a steady domestic link with Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport, facilitating travel for government and business personnel. HiSky has also expanded its presence at BAY, offering direct international flights to major European hubs like Paris.
