Pemba Airport (PMA)

Pemba Airport (PMA), also known as Karume Airport or Wawi Airport, is the primary aviation hub serving Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, Tanzania. The airport operates from a single, functional passenger terminal designed for rapid transit, situated approximately 4 miles (7 km) southeast of the island's administrative capital, Chake Chake. It acts as a critical infrastructure link, connecting the 'Green Island' to major national hubs like Zanzibar City (ZNZ) and Dar es Salaam (DAR) via regular scheduled services by carriers such as Auric Air and Precision Air. The terminal infrastructure currently provides basic essential amenities, including a comfortable waiting hall, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and modernized restroom facilities. Travelers should note that the facility is presently undergoing a major $263 million modernization and expansion project, expected to be completed by 2027, which will introduce a significantly larger international-standard terminal and an extended runway. While the building currently lacks on-site ATMs or currency exchange bureaus, it provides a secure environment for passengers and administrative support for regional charter operations. Ground transportation to central Chake Chake is well-supported by local taxi ranks and shared minibuses (*Dala Dalas*) located directly outside the terminal exit, providing a quick 15-minute link to the city's main districts and banking centers. Many local eco-resorts also provide pre-arranged shuttle transfers for their guests, which is highly recommended for reaching the more remote coastal diving sites. Travelers are strongly encouraged to handle significant financial needs in the city center prior to arrival at the field, as on-site services are focused on the immediate needs of departing passengers.
