Phan Rang Airport (PHA)

Phan Rang Airport (PHA), also known as Thành Sơn Air Base, is a domestic aviation facility located in the Ninh Thuan Province of southern Vietnam. While the airport features a substantial 9,990-foot (3,045m) concrete runway, it currently functions exclusively as a restricted military airbase operated by the Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF). Consequently, there are no active commercial passenger terminals, public check-in services, or civilian amenities available on-site for general travelers. The infrastructure at the base is tailored for military operations and includes extensive hangars, administrative buildings, and support facilities that are not accessible to the public. Historically, the site served as a major airbase during the Vietnam War and remains a critical strategic installation for the national defense of the southern coastal region. While the Vietnamese government has proposed converting Thành Sơn into a dual-use facility to boost regional tourism, as of early 2026, it remains a closed military site with no public transit or commercial facilities. Travelers seeking air access to Phan Rang and the surrounding coastal resorts typically utilize Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR), located approximately 37 miles (60 km) to the north. Ground transportation from CXR to Phan Rang involves a scenic 1 to 1.5-hour drive via the national highway, with regular taxi and shuttle services available. Alternatively, the Phan Rang - Thap Cham Railway Station provides high-speed links to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, acting as the primary public transport hub for visitors exploring the historic Cham towers and the Ninh Thuan coastline.
