Fuvahmulah Airport (FVM)

Fuvahmulah Airport (FVM) is a specialized domestic facility serving the unique single-island atoll of Fuvahmulah in the Gnaviyani Atoll of the southern Maldives. Opened in 2011, the airport features a single 1,100-meter asphalt runway and acts as a critical aviation link for one of the most geographically distinct islands in the archipelago. Unlike most Maldivian islands, Fuvahmulah is a massive, elevated island with freshwater lakes and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, making the airport a premier destination for divers and eco-tourists.

The passenger terminal is a modern, single-story building designed for efficient regional transit. It provides essential facilities for travelers including a comfortable waiting lounge, streamlined check-in counters, and basic restroom amenities. While there are no large-scale retail or duty-free shops on-site, the terminal offers a welcoming atmosphere reflecting the island's traditional hospitality. The airport is also equipped with modern security systems and serves as a vital node for medical evacuations and the transport of essential supplies to this remote southern community.

Scheduled air services are exclusively provided by Maldivian, the national flag carrier, which operates multiple daily flights to Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. These flights, typically taking about 90 minutes, connect Fuvahmulah with the primary international gateway of the country. Ground transportation on the island is unique, with bicycles and motorbikes being the most popular ways to get around; rental agencies often coordinate delivery directly to the terminal. The airport is situated at the southern end of the island, and travelers are advised to confirm their flight status frequently, as operations can be affected by the strong wave action and weather patterns typical of the southern atolls.
