Mzuzu Airport (ZZU)

Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) is a critical aviation facility serving as the primary aerial gateway to Malawi's Northern Region. Located in the city of Mzuzu, the airport provides essential connectivity for government officials, business professionals, and tourists visiting northern attractions like the Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve and Nyika National Park. For over a decade, the airfield primarily supported charter and private operations, but it is currently undergoing a significant transformation to restore its status as a major domestic hub. A massive 1.4 billion kwacha renovation project, initiated in late 2024 and scheduled for completion in early 2025, is dramatically upgrading the airport's infrastructure. These improvements include the extension of the primary runway (17/35) to 1,700 meters, enabling the facility to safely accommodate larger turboprop aircraft such as the Bombardier Q400. This rehabilitation is a cornerstone of the Malawian government's strategy to bolster regional transport and stimulate economic growth in the north. The passenger terminal has also been part of this extensive overhaul, with significant upgrades to the building's layout and systems. The renovation introduced modernized, separate departure and arrival lounges, a new air traffic control room, and state-of-the-art navigation equipment. These enhancements are designed to provide a more comfortable and professional environment for travelers, featuring improved seating, clearer information displays, and more efficient security screening processes compared to the airport's previous austere configuration. Scheduled commercial service is poised for a major comeback, with Malawian Airlines expected to resume regular flights to the capital, Lilongwe, in 2025 after a long hiatus. The airport is also a key base for regional operators like Ulendo Airlink, which connects Mzuzu to Likoma Island and other destinations. With its upgraded runway and revitalized terminal, Mzuzu Airport is set to reclaim its role as a vital pillar of Malawi's domestic aviation network, facilitating both commerce and the vibrant tourism industry of the country's northern highlands.
