Chelinda Airport (CEH), also known by its ICAO code FWCD, is a remote and specialized regional aviation facility located within the Nyika National Park in Northern Malawi. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) on the Nyika Plateau, it is one of the highest airports in Southern Africa. The facility serves as the primary air link for the Chelinda Camp and the surrounding wilderness, providing a critical alternative to the long and often difficult overland journey from the national capital or the lakeshore. The 'terminal' facilities at Chelinda are characteristic of a remote safari airstrip, featuring a simple and functional open-air structure rather than a traditional passenger building. There are no conventional airport amenities such as check-in counters, retail shops, or cafes; instead, travelers are met directly on the airfield by lodge personnel. Due to the high altitude and unpredictable mountain weather, all operations are conducted strictly during daylight hours, and pilots must exercise extreme caution as local wildlife, including eland and zebra, are frequently found near the runway. Commercial services at CEH are primarily operated by private charter companies, including Ulendo Airlink and Nyika Safari flights, which provide non-stop connections to Lilongwe (LLW) and Mzuzu (ZZU). These flights are essential for the region's high-end eco-tourism industry and for supporting conservation and research efforts within Malawi's largest national park. Ground transportation from the airstrip is uniquely provided by the Chelinda Lodge and Camp vehicles, which transport guests directly to their accommodations. The airport's presence is fundamental to the accessibility of the Nyika Plateau, ensuring that this unique Afro-montane landscape remains connected to the broader Malawian and international travel networks.
