Savannakhet Airport (ZVK)

Savannakhet Airport (ZVK) is a significant international aviation facility serving the city of Savannakhet and the southern region of Laos. Located just outside the city center, the airport acts as a primary aerial link for the country's second-most populous province. Its proximity to the Mekong River and the border with Thailand makes it a strategic gateway for both regional commerce and international tourism, providing access to the area's many historic temples and colonial-era architecture. The airport's history is rooted in military aviation, having originally served as an air force base. In 1990, with substantial technical support from the French government, the facility was transitioned to civilian use and modernized to handle international passenger traffic. Over the decades, it has also played a unique role in international relations, frequently hosting specialized U.S. military aircraft, such as the C-130 Hercules, involved in humanitarian missions to locate the remains of servicemen missing since the Vietnam War. Today, the airport is a critical component of the regional economy, particularly in supporting the nearby Savan-SENO Special Economic Zone (Savan Park). As a key node on the East-West Economic Corridor, the facility facilitates the movement of business professionals and investors between Laos and neighboring Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The passenger terminal is a functional and easy-to-navigate facility that handles both domestic and international flights within a single structure. It features a 1,633-meter concrete runway capable of accommodating regional turboprops and narrow-body jets. Inside, travelers have access to essential services including check-in counters, baggage claim, and customs and immigration areas. While the facility is modest in scale, it offers a professional environment for those connecting to the national capital, Vientiane, or traveling internationally to regional destinations like Bangkok.
