Altai Airport (LTI) is a critical domestic aviation hub for western Mongolia, serving as the primary gateway to Altai City and the surrounding Govi-Altai Province. Situated at a significant elevation of approximately 2,213 meters (7,260 feet), the airport occupies a strategic position for travelers exploring the rugged Altai Mountains and the northern reaches of the Gobi Desert. In recent years, the facility has undergone important modernizations, most notably the installation of a 2,880-meter asphalt runway that allows it to accommodate a wider range of regional aircraft, including the Dash 8 and Fokker 50, even in challenging high-altitude conditions. The passenger terminal is a compact, single-story facility designed for efficient regional transit. Inside, the layout is straightforward, housing essential services such as check-in counters, a security screening zone, and a dedicated waiting hall for departures. While the facilities are clean and functional, amenities remain basic; travelers can find a small snack bar offering water and light refreshments, but there are no full-service restaurants or extensive retail outlets on-site. Visitors are encouraged to handle significant dining or financial needs in Altai City before heading to the terminal, as the airport is designed for quick processing rather than extended layovers. Transportation to and from Altai Airport is convenient due to its proximity to the city center, located just 2 to 3 kilometers to the west. Local taxis are the most reliable mode of transport, with the short drive typically taking about 10 to 15 minutes. While there are no regular public bus services, many travelers coordinate private 4x4 transfers directly from the airport for expeditions into the provincial backcountry. Scheduled flights are primarily operated by MIAT Mongolian Airlines and Aero Mongolia, typically connecting the region with Ulaanbaatar. Due to the high-altitude mountain environment, travelers should remain mindful of potential weather-related schedule adjustments, particularly during the winter months.
