Lelystad Airport (LEY) features one of the most modern and sustainable passenger terminals in Europe, completed in 2018 as part of a major expansion project to alleviate pressure on Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The 12,000-square-meter facility is LEED Gold certified, utilizing 74 solar panels and air-source heat pumps to operate entirely without a gas connection. While the terminal infrastructure is fully ready for commercial operations, scheduled passenger flights are currently targeted to begin in 2027 following a government decision to prioritize leisure and holiday traffic. The terminal's design focuses on 'self-service' efficiency and transparency, intended to blend seamlessly with the surrounding Flevopolder landscape. Once fully operational, the facility will feature automated check-in and baggage drop-off systems to ensure a streamlined flow for an estimated 1.5 million annual passengers. Planned amenities include the Grand Café Het Lage Land, a Heinemann Duty Free shop, and specialized lounge areas featuring local products from regional farmers. The layout also includes family-friendly spaces, such as a dedicated children's play corner, making it an ideal choice for leisure travelers. Currently, the airport is a primary hub for general aviation, including flight schools, business charters, and private pilots. Ground access to the terminal is highly efficient, with a dedicated exit from the A6 motorway and public bus links to the Lelystad Centrum railway station, providing a 45-minute connection to Amsterdam. Visitors to the site can also explore the Aviodrome Aviation Museum, which is located on the airport grounds and houses an extensive collection of historic aircraft.
