Kärdla Airport (KDL) is a modern regional aviation facility serving Hiiumaa Island in Estonia. As of early 2026, the airport is nearing the completion of a major terminal renovation project designed to enhance passenger comfort and modernize its security systems. During the final phase of construction, passenger operations—including check-in, ticketing, and security screening—are efficiently managed through a temporary container-based terminal setup. Once fully reopened, the facility will feature a sleek, single-story terminal that blends Estonian architectural design with high-tech functionality.

The terminal's layout is designed for maximum efficiency and speed, catering primarily to domestic flights between Hiiumaa and Tallinn. In its standard configuration, all key passenger zones—including the departures hall, check-in counters, and arrivals lobby—are integrated within a single building, ensuring exceptionally short walking distances. The airport features a 1,520-meter (4,987 ft) asphalt runway (14/32) capable of handling medium-sized regional jets and turboprops, such as the ATR 42 series commonly used by local carriers like NyxAir.

Amenities within the Kärdla terminal provide essential services for both island residents and tourists. Travelers have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the facility and basic sanitation services. While the main terminal is under renovation, refreshments are limited, but under normal operations, a charming local café provides coffee, tea, and fresh Estonian pastries. The terminal is designed to be fully accessible for passengers with reduced mobility and includes dedicated facilities for families with young children. Because of its domestic focus, there are no Duty-Free shops or currency exchange offices on-site.

Ground transportation at KDL is well-integrated with the island's urban hub, located approximately 7 kilometers east of the Kärdla town center. A dedicated airport bus (Line 6241/6242) provides a reliable and cost-effective link to the Kärdla bus station, with schedules timed to coincide with flight arrivals and departures. Taxis are also available but are best pre-booked, especially for early morning or late evening flights. For those arriving by private vehicle, a free parking area with approximately 37 spaces is located directly in front of the terminal. Travelers are generally advised to arrive at least 60 minutes before their domestic flight to account for the streamlined security procedures typical of this regional hub.
