Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ)

Kochi Ryoma Airport (KCZ) is a modern regional aviation facility serving Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Notably, it is the only airport in the country named after a historical figure, the samurai Sakamoto Ryoma, a pioneer of modern Japan. Located in Nankoku City, approximately 13 kilometers east of the Kochi city center, the airport acts as a primary gateway for travelers exploring the rugged Pacific coastline and the historical sites of the Tosa province. The main terminal building spans 10,900 square meters (117,327 sq ft) across two stories, with construction underway on a new 3,500-square-meter international terminal scheduled to open in spring 2027.

The current terminal's layout is functionally organized with distinct arrival and departure zones. The first floor houses domestic and international check-in counters for JAL, ANA, and FDA, along with the arrivals area featuring baggage claim belts, information desk, and car rental counters. The second floor serves as the departure zone with security screening and boarding gates accessible after check-in processing. A third-floor observation deck provides panoramic views of the airfield, Tosa Bay, and surrounding mountains, remaining free for public access.

The terminal emphasizes Kochi Prefecture's 'Tosa' culinary and craft heritage through its commercial offerings. Fourteen retail stores operate within the compact terminal, with four eateries concentrated on the second floor serving local specialties like 'katsuo-no-tataki' (seared bonito) and Tosa beef. The 'Big Sun' gift shop features over 600 regional items including yuzu products, artisanal sake, and traditional coral jewelry. Business amenities include free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, electronic device charging stations in waiting areas, a paid lounge for quiet work, ATMs, currency exchange, and baby care facilities with dedicated nursing rooms on the arrivals floor.

Ground transportation connections are streamlined with the regional network. Airport Limousine Bus service provides frequent connections to central Kochi, including JR Kochi Station and Harimayabashi intersection, with journey times of 35-45 minutes. Taxis and car rental agencies operate from the first floor, while parking exceeds 1,000 spaces with complimentary first 30 minutes. The new international terminal under construction represents a 3.6 billion yen investment, featuring three-story steel-frame construction to enhance capacity and international service capabilities when completed.
