Masindi Airport (KCU)

Masindi Airport (KCU), officially identified by its ICAO code HUMI, is a small regional aviation facility located in the Kyema suburb, approximately 10 kilometers north of the Masindi town center in Western Uganda. Managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), the airport serves as a critical air gateway for tourists exploring the nearby Murchison Falls National Park and for regional business personnel. The facility sits at an elevation of 3,803 feet (1,159 meters) above sea level, surrounded by the lush tropical landscapes of the Bunyoro sub-region.

The airport features a modest, single integrated passenger terminal designed for functional simplicity rather than high-volume traffic. The terminal building houses all essential passenger functions, including a small check-in area and a functional waiting lounge. Because the facility primarily manages low-volume domestic and charter flights, the layout is highly intuitive, with all zones located within short walking distance of one another. The infrastructure is primarily geared towards supporting light fixed-wing aircraft and turboprops, with arrivals and departures occurring within the same general-purpose facility.

Amenities within the Masindi terminal are basic and reflect the remote and regional nature of the airfield. While there are no formal restaurants, Duty-Free shops, or ATMs on-site, travelers can find essential refreshments and basic seating in the waiting lounge. The airport's 2,042-meter (6,700 ft) unpaved grass and murram runway is well-maintained to support the daily movements of regional air taxis and private charters. The airfield is equipped with a Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) to assist with navigation, though it is currently not fully fenced, a common feature of smaller regional airfields in Uganda.

Ground transportation at KCU is well-supported by local services, with the Masindi town center just a 15-to-20 minute drive away. Travelers can easily access the town via private hire vehicles or pre-arranged taxis stationed outside the terminal exit. For those heading to Murchison Falls, most major safari lodges provide dedicated airport transfer services for their guests, which is the most reliable way to reach the park. Travelers are generally advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before their domestic flight to account for standard security and baggage processing procedures at this regional hub.
