Kribi Airport (KBI)

Kribi Airport (KBI), also known by its ICAO code FKKB, is a secondary aerodrome serving the coastal city of Kribi in Cameroon's South Province. Historically a small facility primarily used for light private and government aviation, the airport is currently at the center of a major national infrastructure project. Strategically located near the Kribi Deep Sea Port and the region's expanding industrial zones, the airport is being transformed into a modern international gateway to support the economic growth of one of Central Africa's most important maritime and tourist hubs.

At present, the airport's infrastructure is minimalist and primarily consists of a 2,100-meter (6,890 ft) laterite (unpaved) runway. There is no large-scale passenger terminal building in the traditional sense; instead, the facility utilizes a small administrative structure for flight coordination and passenger processing. This setup is primarily geared towards supporting light turboprop aircraft and private charters rather than high-volume commercial traffic. The airport is situated approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the Kribi town center, providing relatively quick access to the city's famous white-sand beaches and hotels.

As of 2026, a significant modernization program led by the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) is underway to rehabilitate and expand KBI. This multi-billion CFA project includes the paving of the runway to accommodate larger commercial jets, the construction of a modern passenger terminal with dedicated domestic and international zones, and the installation of advanced navigation and safety systems. Once completed, the new terminal will offer a full range of services, including customs and immigration facilities, duty-free retail, and streamlined baggage handling, positioning Kribi as a key node in Cameroon's aviation network.

Amenities at the current facility are extremely limited, and travelers must be fully self-sufficient. There are no on-site restaurants, ATMs, or retail outlets available to the public. However, the airport's proximity to the Kribi town center means that a wide variety of services, including banks and dining options, are just a 15-to-20 minute drive away. Ground transportation is typically handled via private hire vehicles or local taxis, which are best arranged in advance through local contacts or hotels. For those driving, the airport is well-connected to the main coastal highway, providing a straightforward link to the deep-sea port and the surrounding industrial parks.
