Khmelnytskyi Airport (HMJ)

Khmelnytskyi Airport (HMJ) is a historic aviation facility located in western Ukraine, serving the city of Khmelnytskyi and the surrounding Khmelnytskyi Oblast. With a heritage dating back to 1914, when it was part of the pioneering Vienna–Kyiv international airmail route, the airport has long been a significant piece of regional infrastructure. The facility features a 2,200-meter concrete runway (16/34) and a dedicated passenger terminal designed to handle domestic and limited international traffic. Although commercial operations have been suspended since 2014, the airport remains an important site for general aviation and is at the center of ambitious restoration plans intended to transform it into a modern regional hub for both passengers and cargo. The passenger terminal is a functional structure that reflects the mid-to-late 20th-century aviation architecture of Ukraine. While currently vacant of scheduled services, the layout was designed to efficiently process travelers through a centralized check-in hall and a departures area with essential administrative zones. The terminal's interior was once a bustling hub connecting the region to major cities like Kyiv and Moscow. Recent strategic visions for the airport include a comprehensive reconstruction of the terminal and runway to meet international standards, with the goal of supporting low-cost carriers and establishing a regional flight school once the broader regional situation allows for the resumption of civil aviation. Facilities at Khmelnytskyi Airport are currently limited to those supporting general aviation and maintenance activities. The airport is owned by the local council and managed by KP Khmelnytskyi Airport, which has maintained the site's operational readiness for non-commercial flights. The strategic plan for the airport includes the addition of modern customs facilities, improved cargo handling infrastructure, and an extension of the runway to 2,700 meters to accommodate larger aircraft. While on-site retail and dining are currently unavailable, the airport's proximity to the city of Khmelnytskyi ensures that visitors have easy access to the region's urban amenities. The professional management team continues to seek investment to realize the airport's potential as a vital logistics and tourism gateway for western Ukraine.
