Dushanbe International Airport (DYU) is the primary aviation hub of Tajikistan and a significant gateway to Central Asia. The airport underwent a major transformation in 2014 with the inauguration of a modern international terminal, built in collaboration with French construction firms. This two-level facility spans over 11,000 square meters and is designed to handle up to 1.5 million passengers annually, drastically improving the travel experience compared to the older infrastructure which still serves some domestic and regional functions. The international terminal provides a range of modern amenities across its two floors. The first floor is dedicated to check-in, arrivals, and baggage handling, while the second floor houses the departures lounge, security screening, and passport control. Travelers can find several dining options including fast-food centers, bars, and cafes serving both local and international cuisine. The facility also features duty-free shops, currency exchange bureaus, several ATMs, and free Wi-Fi access. For those seeking extra comfort, pay-per-use premium lounges are available, along with specialized rooms for mothers and children and a medical center for emergencies. Somon Air, the national carrier of Tajikistan, uses DYU as its primary hub, offering extensive links to Russia, the Middle East, and Europe. Other major international carriers like Turkish Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, and Air Astana provide critical connections to Istanbul, Tashkent, and Almaty. Ground transportation is well-integrated with the city center, which is located just 5 kilometers away. Passengers can utilize public bus routes 2, 8, and 12, as well as local 'marshrutkas' (minibuses) and a fleet of taxis. A train station is also situated near the airport entrance, providing additional regional connectivity options.
