Doha International Airport (DIA)

Doha International Airport (DIA) was Qatar's primary aviation hub until the opening of Hamad International Airport (DOH) in 2014. While most commercial passenger operations have shifted to the newer facility, DIA remains an active airfield used for military, private, and state flights. It famously regained international prominence in 2022 when it was temporarily reopened to commercial traffic to help handle the massive influx of visitors during the FIFA World Cup, proving its continued strategic importance to Qatar's aviation infrastructure. The terminal infrastructure at DIA is categorized by its legacy layout, which once featured separate facilities for arrivals and departures, as well as the exclusive Qatar Airways Premium Terminal. Currently, the facilities are more streamlined, primarily catering to VIP and general aviation services. The airport's location is closer to Doha's city center (Mushaireb) than the newer Hamad International, offering a more compact and potentially faster exit for those arriving on private or charter flights. For travelers needing to connect between Doha International (DIA) and Hamad International (DOH), the two airports are separated by a relatively short 15-20 minute drive depending on traffic. While there is no airside transfer between the two, they are linked by Doha's modern road network and the Doha Metro, which serves both general airport areas. If your itinerary involves a change of airports in Doha, it is essential to allow at least 3-4 hours to clear customs, transit between the sites, and re-check for your onward journey.
