Calbayog Airport (CYP)

Calbayog Airport (CYP) is a significant regional aviation hub serving Calbayog City and the broader Samar Island in the Philippines. In May 2021, the airport underwent a massive modernization program that included the inauguration of a brand-new passenger terminal and a substantial extension of its primary runway. These upgrades have transformed the facility from a small feeder airstrip into a capable regional airport, significantly boosting its role in the economic development of the Eastern Visayas region.

The airport's physical infrastructure is centered around a 2,100-meter concrete runway, which was extended by over 500 meters during the recent renovation. This extension allows the facility to safely accommodate larger jet aircraft, such as the Airbus A320, facilitating direct connections to major hubs like Manila and Cebu. The airfield is equipped with modern navigational aids and enhanced lighting, ensuring that it can support a higher frequency of flights and improve operational safety for regional carriers.

The new passenger terminal is a modern, single-story structure designed to handle a daily capacity of approximately 450 passengers, a vast improvement over the old facility's limited throughput. The interior is spacious and fully air-conditioned, featuring streamlined check-in counters, a secure baggage claim area, and multiple boarding gates. For traveler convenience, the terminal includes essential facilities such as ATMs, several dining options ranging from quick snacks to full meals, and a variety of retail kiosks selling local Samar products.

Ground transportation at Calbayog Airport is well-organized, with a dedicated parking area and ready access to tricycles, taxis, and van-for-hire services that connect the terminal to the city center and neighboring municipalities. The airport serves as a critical gateway for both business travelers and tourists visiting Samar's natural wonders, including its famous waterfalls and caves.
