Banyuwangi Airport (BWX), formerly known as Blimbingsari Airport, is a unique and award-winning aviation facility serving the eastern tip of Java, Indonesia. Located approximately 15 kilometers south of the Banyuwangi city center, the airport is celebrated as the country’s first "green airport" and was a recipient of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. It serves as a critical strategic node for the regional economy and the thriving tourism industry, providing the primary aerial gateway for visitors heading to the world-famous Ijen Crater and Baluran National Park. The airport’s passenger terminal is renowned for its innovative eco-friendly design, which was created by architect Andra Matin and draws deep inspiration from the traditional houses of the local Osing tribe. The facility features a massive 4,765-square-meter grass-covered roof that provides natural insulation, eliminating the need for traditional air conditioning in the main public areas. The architecture utilizes a passive design approach, incorporating ulin wood louvres and large openings to maximize natural ventilation and daylight, while much of the timber used in construction was reclaimed from old ships. Inside the terminal, passengers experience a spacious and airy atmosphere that emphasizes harmony with the surrounding natural environment. The single-terminal layout manages domestic arrivals and departures within an intuitive complex, featuring centralized check-in counters, a comfortable departures lounge, and several cafes serving traditional Javanese refreshments. The facility also hosts an Executive Lounge for premium travelers and retail kiosks offering local handicrafts. The airport is surrounded by a ten-kilometer "No Development Zone," ensuring that the terminal remains integrated with the picturesque paddy fields and rural landscapes of East Java. Ground transportation at BWX is well-supported by local options, with the Banyuwangi city center located just a short 20-minute drive from the terminal exit. Arriving travelers can easily access official taxi services or coordinate pre-arranged shuttle transfers provided by many of the region’s specialized volcano-tour operators. While there are no high-capacity public rail links directly to the terminal, the airport is well-integrated with the regional road network, providing easy access to the Ketapang Ferry Terminal for those crossing to Bali. Ample parking is available directly in front of the terminal building for the convenience of residents and visitors arriving by private vehicle.
