Betong International Airport (BTZ)

Betong International Airport features a modern 7,000-square-meter passenger terminal building designed to handle over 300 passengers at peak hours and process more than 300,000 passengers annually, representing Thailand's newest international gateway serving the country's southernmost region. Completed in 2022 after construction delays due to COVID-19 at a total cost of 1.9 billion baht, the facility covers 1.47 million square meters and exemplifies contemporary airport design tailored for regional international operations. The terminal provides essential passenger services including check-in facilities, security screening, immigration processing for international arrivals, and basic amenities supporting both domestic and cross-border travel between Thailand and Malaysia. The airport's strategic infrastructure includes a dedicated air traffic control tower operated by Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI) since January 2022, managing operations with VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) and distance measuring equipment (DME) navigation aids. The BET station operates on 113.1 MHz frequency with co-located DME on channel 78X, providing essential radial and distance information for instrument approaches. The aircraft apron accommodates four ATR-72 and Airbus A319 aircraft simultaneously, with the current 1,800-meter runway planned for expansion to 2,100 meters enabling larger Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 operations. Operational challenges reflect the terminal's role in developing southern Thailand's tourism and economic infrastructure, with initial Bangkok-Betong service experiencing passenger demand fluctuations and schedule adjustments throughout 2022-2023. The facility serves dual purposes supporting domestic Thai connectivity and attracting Malaysian tourists through its accessible border location just 20 kilometers from Malaysia, generating an estimated three billion baht in regional economic impact. Despite basic amenities reflecting its recent opening, the terminal represents crucial infrastructure connecting previously underserved southern provinces to Thailand's national aviation network and international destinations.
