Bubaque Airport (BQE)

Bubaque Airport (BQE/GGBU) is the only functional airfield serving the Bijagós Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau, strategically positioned on Bubaque Island approximately 70 kilometers south of the capital Bissau. As the sole aviation gateway to this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the airport serves as a critical transportation hub for tourists, researchers, government officials, and essential supplies reaching this remote and ecologically significant region known for its pristine mangrove forests and diverse wildlife. The airport operates from a single, modest terminal building designed for functional efficiency in the challenging West African coastal environment. The compact facility handles both domestic arrivals and departures through a simple layout featuring basic check-in services, manual baggage processing, and a small waiting area with fundamental seating. The terminal reflects the rustic character of the islands while providing essential passenger services, including basic restroom facilities and a small area for essential supplies and local handicrafts. The runway specifications include a 1.2-kilometer (3,900 feet) unpaved surface designated as Runway 17/35, positioned to take advantage of prevailing winds while offering spectacular approaches over the surrounding Atlantic waters. The natural surface runway requires aircraft specifically suited for unpaved operations, with most services provided by small regional aircraft and charter operations. The airport sits at an elevation of 22 meters (80 feet) above sea level and operates under the Bissau Flight Information Region. Facilities are intentionally basic, reflecting both the remote location and limited infrastructure of the archipelago. The airport lacks fuel services, ground support equipment, and traditional aviation amenities, requiring all operational support to be coordinated in advance from Bissau. The northern approach and departure routes traverse over water, providing passengers with remarkable views of the archipelago's numerous islands, traditional fishing villages, and pristine coastal ecosystems that make this region one of West Africa's most important conservation areas.
