Sir Charles Gaetan Duval Airport operates from a single-story modern terminal building constructed in 2002 during the facility's most significant transformation, serving as the sole aviation gateway to Rodrigues Island positioned 600 kilometers east of mainland Mauritius in the pristine southwestern Indian Ocean. Renamed in 2017 to honor former Deputy Mauritian Prime Minister Sir Gaëtan Duval (1930-1996) who oversaw much of Rodrigues's development, this compact but efficient facility accommodates all passenger services within easy walking distance, making navigation practically impossible to confuse despite serving as the island's complete aviation infrastructure.

The terminal building efficiently consolidates arriving and departing passenger operations through streamlined single-terminal design, featuring essential amenities including comfortable waiting areas, basic dining facilities serving local Creole specialties, retail kiosks offering traditional Rodriguan handicrafts, restrooms, and Air Mauritius service counters managing the vital ATR 72 turboprop connections to mainland Mauritius. Ground transportation coordination areas help passengers access Port Mathurin (the island's capital) and surrounding attractions via taxi and shuttle services, while the terminal's design reflects the authentic laid-back atmosphere characteristic of this autonomous outer island dependency known for pristine lagoons, hiking trails, and unique flora and fauna.

Currently undergoing a massive US$170 million modernization project launched in 2024, the airport represents one of the Indian Ocean's most ambitious infrastructure developments, with World Bank funding supporting construction of a new 2,100-meter runway (replacing the current 1,287-meter strip) designed to accommodate Airbus A321 Neo aircraft rather than limiting operations to smaller turboprops. The comprehensive upgrade scheduled for completion by 2027 includes new terminal facilities, control tower, meteorological building, quarantine facilities, fire station, aircraft hangars, and cold storage facilities designed to transform Rodrigues from a remote destination accessible only by small aircraft into a major Indian Ocean tourism hub.
