Named to honor the revered Indian spiritual leader who spent formative years in Raipur, this facility handled 2.6 million passengers between April 2024 and March 2025, establishing itself as Central India's second-busiest airport after Indore while undergoing transformation to full international status approved by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation in November 2024.

The modern terminal efficiently segregates arrival and departure spaces across two levels, featuring comprehensive passenger amenities including three aero-bridges, eight boarding gates with two hardstand holdrooms, twenty check-in counters, eight X-ray baggage machines, four security counters, and dual conveyor belts for luggage handling capable of processing 817,600 domestic and international passengers annually. Recent infrastructure additions include Air India SATS cargo facilities launched in September 2025 with monthly capacity of 2,000-3,000 tonnes including cold storage capabilities, positioning Raipur as Central India's emerging logistics hub following nearly a decade of delayed cargo hub development now revived under state government initiatives.

Operational transformation accelerates with approved international services targeting high-demand destinations including Dubai and Singapore, pending establishment of immigration and customs facilities alongside upgraded rescue and fire fighting services (RFFS) to meet international standards under Airports Authority of India oversight. The 3,250-meter asphalt runway (06/24) at 1,041 feet elevation accommodates wide-body aircraft essential for international operations, while a proposed 25,000-square-meter terminal expansion with four additional gates addresses future growth projections as Chhattisgarh leverages its strategic central location between major Indian metros.
