Roberts International Airport (ROB)

Roberts International Airport operates as Liberia's primary international gateway and the nation's only facility with scheduled commercial airline services, positioned near Harbel in Margibi County, 35 miles from Monrovia. Named after Joseph Jenkins Roberts, Liberia's first president, this historically significant facility was originally constructed by the U.S. government during World War II as an Air Force base with one of Africa's longest runways, designed to accommodate B-47 Stratojet bombers and later serving as Pan American's principal African hub in the 1970s-80s.

The airport features a robust 11,000-foot asphalt runway (04/22), originally built for strategic bombers and now supporting diverse commercial operations. Following severe damage during Liberia's civil wars that destroyed much of the original infrastructure and caused regular air traffic to cease, the facility underwent comprehensive reconstruction culminating in a new modern passenger terminal opened in 2018-2019, designed for 320,000 annual passengers with enhanced capacity and operational efficiency.

Current terminal facilities include modern baggage handling systems, jet bridges, advanced security screening, and essential passenger amenities supporting airlines including Brussels Airlines (direct service to Europe), Kenya Airways, Air Côte d'Ivoire, and ASKY Airlines connecting Liberia to regional hubs in Nairobi, Abidjan, and Lomé. The facility operates dual terminals with the second terminal primarily serving United Nations operations, reflecting the airport's continued role in international humanitarian and peacekeeping activities.

Processing 234,396 passengers in 2023 (including 98,840 arrivals, 91,105 departures, and 44,451 transits), Roberts International Airport serves as Liberia's lifeline to the global community, providing crucial connectivity for a nation rebuilding its infrastructure and economy following decades of conflict.
