Rajahmundry Airport operates as the aviation gateway to Andhra Pradesh's cultural capital of Rajamahendravaram, positioned at Madhurapudi 16 kilometers north of the historic city center on National Highway 516E, serving as the primary air link to the birthplace of Telugu language and the sacred Godavari River region where millions of pilgrims gather for the twelve-yearly Godavari Pushkarams festival. Operated by the Airports Authority of India and spanning 366 acres originally developed during British colonial period, this facility has evolved from basic infrastructure to modern operations with the existing terminal inaugurated on May 16, 2012, while ambitious expansion plans approved in December 2023 will transform the facility into a major regional hub.

The airport features a single asphalt runway 05/23 measuring 3,165 meters, capable of supporting narrow-body aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 operations, with current terminal facilities handling domestic services while preparing for international operations through the planned new passenger terminal building featuring 28 check-in counters, four aerobridges, and capacity for over 2,100 passengers during peak hours. Foundation stone laid by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia marks the beginning of infrastructure development that will increase annual capacity from current levels to 3 million passengers, positioning the airport for anticipated international airport designation.
