Yaviza Airport (PYV)

Yaviza Airport (PYV) is a primary regional aviation hub serving the town of Yaviza and the Darién Province of southeastern Panama, located just across the Chucunaque River from the city center. The airport operates as a basic regional landing ground and does not feature a formal commercial passenger terminal building or staffed administrative offices. It acts as a critical infrastructure link, notably serving as the gateway to the world-renowned Darién Gap and providing essential air access for government missions, medical evacuations, and specialized private charters.

Facilities at the airstrip are extremely minimal and reflect its status as an unattended rural airfield in a tropical rainforest environment. Rather than a traditional commercial terminal, the facility provides a basic sheltered area used for passenger and cargo coordination, but lacks modern commercial luxuries such as retail shops, full-service restaurants, or on-site ATMs. Travelers and pilots are advised to be completely self-sufficient and to handle all logistical needs, including food and water, within the Yaviza town center prior to arrival at the field, as on-site utilities are focused on immediate transit requirements.

A highly important requirement for all visitors is that the airport is situated at the southern terminus of the Pan-American Highway, and all travelers entering or passing through the region must register their passports at the local Senafront (National Border Service) police station. Operationally, the airfield features a single 1,969-foot grass runway (17/35) and is restricted strictly to daylight operations under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Ground transportation to the town center is informal, with visitors typically utilizing local river-based transport or private vehicle transfers to reach the nearby historic ruins of Fuerte San Jerónimo and the diverse ecological zones of the southern Darién.
