๐ฒ๐ฝ Palenque, Mexico
Palenque International Airport?s passenger terminal opened on February 12, 2014, replacing an older airfield about 3 km to the east so that the Chiapas tourist corridor could be served by a more modern facility. The new building was immediately promoted as an international gateway and was officially designated as such in late 2016 once customs and immigration services were fully staffed. The terminal complex sits on a 249-hectare parcel that includes the runway, taxiway network, perimeter road, dedicated water-treatment plant, public parking, air traffic control tower, authorities building, and emergency-rescue infrastructure; the construction package was funded with 1,269 million pesos from federal and state sources. Daily operations remain focused on a single pier with remote parking positions, so passengers still funnel through a single-level concourse even though the facility was planned with provisions to tie in additional gates if traffic grows. After Interjet?s bankruptcy left the airport without scheduled service, Mexicana restarted Mexico City flights in January 2024 and the airport saw about 16,900 passengers in 2025, with occasional charters by Magnicharters and Calafia Airlines keeping the domestic gateway active.
Allow adequate time for check-in and security procedures. The facility maintains flexible scheduling to accommodate weather-related delays common in the region. Ground transportation options include rental vehicles and taxi services, though advance booking is recommended. Seasonal weather patterns significantly impact flight operations, requiring travelers to maintain flexible schedules. The airport's strategic location serves multiple communities across the surrounding region. Emergency services and medical evacuation capabilities are maintained year-round for community safety. Local aviation services include flight training, aircraft maintenance, and specialized charter operations. Weather monitoring systems provide essential data for safe flight operations in challenging conditions. The facility coordinates closely with regional air traffic control for optimal flight routing. Baggage handling procedures are streamlined due to the airport's focused operational scope.
