Aeroporto Prefeito Doutor Antônio de Barros Lisboa operates as a regional facility serving Pouso Alegre in southern Minas Gerais, strategically positioned approximately 8 kilometers from the city center on João Batista Piffer Avenue in the Jardim Aeroporto neighborhood. The airport underwent significant renovation completed in October 2023, following a R$ 1.5 million investment that modernized this 40-year-old facility to contemporary aviation standards.

The terminal building provides essential passenger amenities including waiting areas, basic refreshment services, and administrative offices coordinating flight operations. Following recent upgrades, the facility now features modern runway lighting systems enabling night operations, significantly expanding operational capabilities beyond previous daylight-only restrictions. Aircraft fuel supply systems have been reactivated as part of the comprehensive modernization program.

Currently serving private, governmental, business, and emergency aircraft operations, the airport plays a crucial role in regional healthcare logistics, facilitating organ transport for transplants and critical patient transfers throughout Minas Gerais state. The facility maintains 24-hour operational readiness for medical emergencies and specialized cargo movements requiring immediate aviation access.

Future development plans include ambitious expansion under a proposed public-private partnership valued at R$ 1.6 billion, with R$ 570 million designated for infrastructure improvements. These plans encompass construction of a new international cargo and passenger terminal named after Padre Senador José Bento Leite Ferreira de Mello, which will complement the existing Dr. Antônio de Barros Lisboa facility. Hangar construction projects are currently under bid as part of the airport's strategic growth initiative.
