Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

Pittsburgh International Airport unveiled its transformed $1.7 billion, 811,000 square foot terminal on November 18, 2025, fundamentally reimagining the passenger experience by eliminating the half-mile separation between ticketing and gates. The modernization retired the underground Automated People Mover (APM) that previously connected landside and airside terminals, replacing it with a direct connection that positions the new landside terminal directly against the existing airside concourses through a pedestrian tunnel and skybridge system.

The new terminal consolidates ticketing, screening, and arrivals into a single integrated hall with 12 state-of-the-art security lanes featuring advanced screening equipment and electronic displays. A streamlined baggage handling system reduces conveyor belt distance from eight miles to three miles, significantly decreasing luggage travel time. The airside terminal maintains its existing concourse structure with 75 gates while undergoing renovations to seamlessly integrate with the new landside facilities, including modifications to hydrant fueling systems, passenger boarding bridges, and gate layouts.

The transformation enhances ground access through four miles of new roadways connecting Interstate 376 via a network of ramps and bridges, culminating in a 1,300-foot dual-level terminal bridge that delivers passengers directly to departures, arrivals, and ground transportation levels. Parking capacity expanded with over 6,000 new spaces including 2,300 additional covered spaces, supported by shuttle service from existing lots. The famous AirMall with over 100 retail and dining options continues operating within the renovated facility.

Construction achieved the remarkable feat of merging a 1990s-era campus with an entirely new terminal without disrupting operations, employing a "separate-through-construction" approach that preserved continuous airport functionality. Community-focused amenities include the Welcome Point, an interior space where visitors can wait for arriving passengers with access to concessions, green terrace areas, and comfortable seating. Over 80% of art and cultural installations feature work from local Pittsburgh artists, reinforcing the airport's regional identity while establishing it as a modern gateway serving 9.9 million annual passengers.
