๐ฒ๐ฒ Putao, Myanmar
Putao Airport (PBU) is a small domestic aviation facility serving the remote town of Putao in Kachin State, Myanmar, nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. The airport features a single, compact passenger terminal building designed to facilitate regional travel for trekkers and mountaineers heading to Mt. Hkakabo Razi. It acts as the primary lifeline for this isolated valley, as overland access remains extremely restricted and challenging.
The terminal infrastructure is basic and functional, providing a sheltered waiting hall and manual check-in counters for domestic regional carriers like Myanma National Airlines. While the building lacks modern commercial amenities like ATMs, currency exchange desks, or public Wi-Fi, travelers can find a few small tea shops and local vendors selling snacks and bottled water just outside the entrance. Travelers are strongly encouraged to carry sufficient local currency (MMK) and essential supplies, as on-site services are very limited.
Operationally, the airport features a single runway situated at an elevation of 1,499 feet and operates primarily during daylight hours under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Flight schedules are highly subject to the region's unpredictable mountain weather, with frequent fog and low visibility during the monsoon season. Ground transportation to the Putao town center is informal, typically requiring visitors to arrange pre-booked pickups through their guesthouse or trekking operator.
Putao Airport (PBU) is the primary aviation gateway to the far northern Himalayan region of Myanmar. It handles regular domestic flights from Myitkyina (MYT) via Myanmar Airways International (MAI) and regional carriers. Ground transport into the town center (approx. 3km away) consists of local motorcycle taxis and private hires which meet arrivals.
A critical tip: Putao is a strictly regulated region; all non-residents MUST have their travel permits and local host information confirmed and ready for inspection at the terminal. Most hikers and tourists are met by their pre-arranged trekking guide and driver Because Putao is tightly regulated, the airport works only when the permit paperwork, host details, and domestic flight booking all line up before arrival.
The terminal is basic with manual manifest checks. Arrive 2 hours early for departures. Weather in the mountains is prone to sudden rain and fog; always build in a 24-hour buffer for your return flight Mountain weather can also close the day out quickly, so the best transfers are the ones built with a buffer instead of a same-day onward gamble. The guide and permit check are the real gatekeepers of a Putao arrival. Mountain weather makes the 24-hour buffer the most important practical habit.
โข Your trekking guide will almost certainly meet you at the arrivals gate.
โข You MUST secure a special permit to visit Putao before flying.
โข Morning flights are the only way to beat the Himalayan cloud cover.
โข Baggage weight is strictly monitored on the small turboprop planes.
โข Carry plenty of cash (MMK) as card facilities are non-existent in the town.
