Overberg Airport (OVG)

Air Force Base (AFB) Overberg (OVG) is a primary military installation of the South African Air Force located near Bredasdorp in the Western Cape. As a secure military site and the home of the Test Flight and Development Centre (TFDC), the facility does not operate a traditional civilian passenger terminal. It serves as a strategic hub for aviation testing, weapons development, and anti-tank missile trials within the adjacent Denel Overberg Test Range.

The facility's infrastructure is optimized for high-performance military operations and technical evaluations, featuring two substantial asphalt runways, with the primary strip (17/35) measuring 10,220 feet. While it lacks standard commercial amenities like duty-free shops or public lounges, the base includes a SAAF cafeteria for authorized personnel and essential administrative support for government flights. Prior Permission Required (PPR) is mandatory for any non-military aircraft wishing to utilize the field.

Ground transportation to and from the base is restricted, with no public transit or dedicated airport shuttle services available. Visitors typically arrange private vehicle transport from Bredasdorp, located approximately 12 miles (19 km) away, where more extensive medical, lodging, and dining facilities are situated. Given the base's sensitive role in national defense and flight testing, public access is strictly controlled and photography is generally prohibited.
