Out Skerries Airfield (OUK)

Out Skerries Airfield (OUK) is a remote domestic airstrip located on the island of Bruray in the Out Skerries, Shetland. The facility functions as a basic regional landing ground and does not feature a formal commercial passenger terminal building. It acts as a vital infrastructure link for the community, primarily supporting air ambulance flights, emergency services, and authorized private charters. Facilities at the airfield are extremely minimal, typically consisting of a small parking area and a basic shelter for passengers. The 'terminal' amenities for the islands are actually centered at the nearby ferry pier in Bruray, which features a modern waiting room equipped with a kitchenette, public restrooms, and a tourist information point. Travelers are advised to be completely self-sufficient, as the airfield itself is often unattended by permanent staff. The airfield is notable for having one of the shortest runways in the United Kingdom, a single 1,230-foot (375m) gravel and asphalt strip (09/27). Due to its undulating surface and challenging approach, the airfield is primarily used by small STOL aircraft and requires prior permission for all landings. Most visitors to the Out Skerries now utilize the regular ferry services from mainland Shetland, as scheduled commercial air service was suspended in late 2018.
