Mobile Regional Airport (MOB)

Mobile Regional Airport operates a terminal with 6 gates and jetways serving commercial flights that will transition to the new Mobile International Airport (BFM) downtown facility when it opens in fall 2026. The current terminal, located 13 miles west of downtown Mobile, features renovated shops and restaurants including Carpe Diem Coffee and Dew Drop Inn, car rental agencies, handicap accessible elevators, and modern passenger amenities including free WiFi, charging stations, and a business lounge.

The airport shares its 1,717-acre facility with the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, commissioned in December 1966 when the Coast Guard acquired the former U.S. Air Force Reserve facility. This multi-mission installation provides advanced training for Coast Guard pilots and aircrew in MH-65D Dolphin and MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters, as well as HC-144A/B Ocean Sentry turboprop aircraft. The base also houses the Coast Guard National Strike Force's Gulf Strike Team, making it a critical capabilities development center for Coast Guard aviation.

Commercial operations currently connect Mobile to four major hubs through Delta, American, and United Airlines service to Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Houston-Intercontinental, and Washington-Dulles. Of the airport's 75,034 annual aircraft operations (2021 data), 72% are military flights reflecting the significant Coast Guard presence, while commercial airline service represents just 5% of total movements. The facility also hosts Airbus Space and Defense operations as part of Mobile's growing aerospace sector.

The impending transition to Mobile International Airport downtown represents a $380 million transformation of regional aviation infrastructure. The new five-gate terminal (expandable to 12 gates) with a 1,250-space parking garage will provide closer downtown access when commercial service relocates in 2026. Following this transition, Mobile Regional will continue as a military and general aviation facility, maintaining its critical role in Coast Guard training operations while the Mobile Airport Authority's four facilities collectively generate $2 billion in annual economic value for Alabama.
