Shirak International Airport (LWN)

Shirak International Airport (LWN) is Armenia's second-largest aviation facility and a critical transport hub for the northern region, situated approximately 5 kilometers from the center of Gyumri. Serving as the primary international alternate to Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport, the facility has recently undergone a significant $14 million modernization program aimed at increasing its capacity to 700,000 passengers annually. Its impressive 3,220-meter asphalt runway was fully renovated in 2021 and is equipped with ILS Category I landing systems, allowing it to accommodate large-scale aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400 and Antonov An-124. The passenger experience has been completely transformed by the addition of a new 1,000-square-meter departure hall and a 900-square-meter arrivals area. Inside, travelers have access to modern amenities including a 450-square-meter duty-free shopping zone operated by Avolta, dedicated cafes, and streamlined border control cabines. The terminal design prioritizes efficient passenger flow, with the new arrivals hall doubling the size of previous infrastructure and adding eight specialized passport control booths. The facility also continues to support the Armenian Air Force, which maintains an operations and maintenance base on the northeastern perimeter of the airfield. Transportation to and from Shirak International is well-integrated with the city of Gyumri, with regular taxi services providing a swift 10-minute commute to the historic city center and the main railway station. The airport is increasingly positioned as a strategic hub for low-cost carriers, with ongoing government initiatives supporting new routes to European and regional destinations. For travelers, the terminal offers a professional and low-stress environment with significantly shorter processing times than major metropolitan hubs. Arriving at the terminal at least two hours before an international flight is recommended to ensure smooth transit through the airport's upgraded security and customs systems.
