Karamay Airport (KRY)

Karamay Guhai Airport (KRY) serves as a critical transportation hub for the "Oil City" in northern Xinjiang, located approximately 17 kilometers from the Karamay city center. The airport has undergone significant modernization and expansion as part of China's regional infrastructure development plans, increasing its terminal area from 5,000 to over 13,000 square meters. This upgrade has substantially boosted the facility's annual passenger capacity to approximately 2 million, allowing it to better serve the growing demands of both the industrial energy sector and the local tourism market. The expanded passenger terminal is designed for efficiency, featuring an increased number of check-in counters, five security screening lanes—including a dedicated VIP channel—and multiple baggage claim carousels. Inside the sterile area, travelers can find a well-appointed passenger lounge on the second floor (F2) near Gate 5. This lounge provides a comfortable environment with massage chairs, refreshments, and business services such as high-speed Wi-Fi and printing facilities, catering to frequent flyers and business travelers connected through major carriers like China Southern and Air China. Ground transportation and terminal access are streamlined by the airport's integration with local transit networks. A connecting corridor now links the older sections of the facility with the new expansion, ensuring a smooth flow for passengers. The airfield itself has also seen recent improvements, including a runway extension to 3,200 meters and additional aircraft parking stands, which allow the airport to handle larger, medium-haul aircraft and serve as a strategic backup for Urumqi International Airport during inclement weather or heavy traffic periods.
