Kolhapur Airport (KLH), officially known as Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport since 2018, operates as a significant regional aviation hub serving the historic city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. Located at Ujlaiwadi, approximately 9 kilometers southeast of Kolhapur city center, this Airports Authority of India (AAI) managed facility serves as an important gateway connecting western Maharashtra to major metropolitan destinations across India. The airport designation honors Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, a member of Kolhapur's erstwhile royal family, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage and historical significance in the Maratha Empire.

The airport operates with a substantially upgraded runway infrastructure, featuring a single runway that has been extended and strengthened as part of a comprehensive Rs 274 crore modernization program. The runway now stretches 2,400 meters in length, providing adequate capacity to accommodate narrow-body aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 operations, representing a significant upgrade from the previous 1,370-meter configuration. This enhancement has dramatically expanded the airport's operational capabilities, enabling direct connectivity to major Indian metropolitan areas and supporting the region's growing economic development and tourism industry.

The newly constructed terminal building spans 4,000 square meters and represents a state-of-the-art passenger processing facility designed to handle 300 passengers per hour during peak operations. The terminal features ten modern check-in counters, contemporary passenger amenities, and efficient baggage handling systems optimized for regional aircraft operations. Architecturally, the terminal building showcases local cultural heritage through its interior design elements and front facade, which incorporates traditional archway designs inspired by historic structures including Kolhapur's Maharaja Palace, Bhavani Mandap, and the ancient Panhala Fort, creating a distinctive sense of place that celebrates regional identity.

The facility has received Four-Star GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) certification, demonstrating commitment to environmental sustainability through energy-efficient building systems and environmentally friendly construction practices. Current airline operations include IndiGo and Star Air, providing scheduled services to major destinations including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Tirupati. The airport operates 24/7 following recent license upgrades, while ongoing infrastructure improvements include installation of advanced navigation aids (DVOR/DME), construction of expanded apron areas, an isolation bay, and a new air traffic control tower, positioning Kolhapur Airport as a modern regional aviation facility supporting western Maharashtra's connectivity and economic development goals.
