Kigali International Airport (KGL), also known as Kanombe Airport, is the primary aviation gateway to Rwanda and one of the most efficient hubs in East Africa. Following a major $30 million expansion and modernization project completed in late 2017, the facility has significantly increased its capacity to handle growing domestic and international traffic. The airport features a modern, integrated passenger terminal designed for maximum efficiency, acting as the primary hub for the national carrier, RwandAir, and connecting the landlocked nation with major African, European, and Middle Eastern hubs. The terminal's layout is vertically organized across two primary levels to streamline the passenger experience. The ground floor is dedicated to arrivals, housing modernized immigration zones, customs clearance, and a spacious baggage reclaim hall. The upper floor serves as the main departures hub, containing over a dozen check-in counters, a secure security screening zone, and well-appointed boarding lounges. This compact and intuitive design ensures exceptionally short walking distances, often allowing travelers to move from the check-in hall to the aircraft apron in under 15 minutes. Amenities within the Kigali terminal provide a high standard of service while showcasing Rwanda's reputation for cleanliness and hospitality. Passengers can relax in the premium Pearl Lounge, which offers business services, refreshments, and shower facilities. In the public area, several cafes serve authentic Rwandan specialty coffee and international light meals, alongside retail outlets offering high-quality local handicrafts and tea. The facility provides free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the building, clean public restrooms, and specialized baby care rooms. The airport's apron has been expanded to 53,000 square meters, capable of accommodating up to 18 aircraft simultaneously. Ground transportation at KGL is well-coordinated with the city's urban area, located approximately 10 kilometers east of the central business district. A well-organized taxi rank is located immediately outside the arrivals hall, with fixed-rate fares providing a reliable link to downtown hotels. For a more modern experience, local ride-hailing apps like Yego and Pascal are widely used and offer transparent pricing for the 20-minute journey. Additionally, most major international hotels in Kigali provide dedicated airport shuttle services for their guests. Travelers are generally advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures to account for thorough security procedures.
