Sary-Arka Airport (KGF)

Sary-Arka International Airport (KGF) is a rapidly evolving aviation and logistics hub serving Karaganda and Central Kazakhstan region. Located 24 kilometers southeast of Karaganda city center, the airport is undergoing a comprehensive transformation as part of strategic development initiatives to establish Karaganda as a major Europe-Asia logistics bridge. The current passenger terminal manages both domestic and international traffic, serving as a critical gateway for the region's mining, industrial, and space-related operations.

The existing terminal operates across multiple levels with dedicated zones for different passenger services. The ground floor accommodates check-in facilities, arrivals processing, and baggage reclaim areas, featuring both traditional counters and digital self-service kiosks for major carriers including Air Astana, SCAT, and FlyArystan. Upper levels house secure departure areas with immigration control, security screening, and passenger lounges. The terminal includes VIP and CIP facilities for premium travelers, reflecting the airport's role in serving business and industrial traffic.

Terminal amenities blend Kazakh cultural elements with modern international standards. Dining options include cafes and restaurants serving traditional Central Asian cuisine alongside international fare, complemented by duty-free retail areas. The airport maintains specialized facilities supporting its unique role in International Space Station (ISS) crew recovery operations, including dedicated medical and reception areas for returning cosmonauts. Additional services include transit accommodations, complimentary Wi-Fi, prayer facilities, and business centers catering to the region's industrial travelers.

Major infrastructure expansion is planned through 2025-2027 under an approved master plan involving $270 million investment, with $70 million dedicated to airport infrastructure including runway improvements, new cargo terminals, expanded apron capacity, and enhanced fuel facilities. The development includes construction of 10 new cargo warehouses totaling 100,000 square meters with capacity for one million tons annually, positioning the airport to grow cargo volumes from 15,000 to 200,000 tonnes per year. A 350-hectare Special Economic Zone surrounding the airport offers operational incentives including free trade warehouse facilities for transit cargo processing without full customs clearance.
