Kengtung Airport (KET), also known as Kyaing Tong Airport, is a significant regional aviation facility serving the city of Kengtung and the wider eastern Shan State in Myanmar. Situated approximately 10 to 15 minutes from the city center, the airport acts as a critical air bridge between this remote highland region and major domestic hubs like Mandalay and Heho. The facility sits at an elevation of 2,631 feet (802 meters) above sea level and is surrounded by the picturesque landscapes of the Golden Triangle region. The airport features a modest, single-story integrated passenger terminal designed for functional simplicity rather than high-volume traffic. The layout is straightforward, with all essential passenger functions—including check-in counters, a secure security screening hall, and a functional waiting lounge—housed within a single building. Because the facility primarily manages low-capacity domestic flights operated by Myanmar National Airlines and other regional carriers, the distance from the terminal entrance to the aircraft apron is exceptionally short, allowing for rapid passenger processing and manual baggage handling directly on the airfield. Amenities within the Kengtung terminal are minimalist and reflect the remote and regional nature of the airfield. While there are no formal restaurants or Duty-Free shops, travelers can find essential refreshments at small local cafes and kiosks serving tea, coffee, and light snacks. The terminal also features a few small retail stalls selling local handicrafts and travel essentials. The airport's significant 2,382-meter (7,815 ft) asphalt runway (12/30) is well-maintained to support jet and turboprop aircraft typical of regional domestic routes. The facility is strictly restricted to authorized daylight operations, as there is no runway lighting for night landings. Ground transportation at KET is well-coordinated with the local urban infrastructure, with central Kengtung city just a short drive away. Travelers can easily access the town via local taxis, tuk-tuks, or motorcycle taxis stationed outside the terminal exit to meet all scheduled flight arrivals. There are no dedicated airport shuttle buses or permanent car rental desks on-site; travelers needing independent transport are advised to coordinate with contacts in Mandalay or Kengtung town. Travelers are generally advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before their domestic flight to account for standard security and baggage processing procedures.
