Sonari Airport (IXW), also known as Jamshedpur Airport, is a significant domestic aviation facility serving the industrial city of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, India. Owned by Tata Steel and operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport acts as a primary link for the region's robust steel and manufacturing sectors. The facility recently reopened for commercial operations in early 2023, featuring a single passenger terminal designed to provide an efficient and professional environment for business travelers and residents. Its role is paramount for connecting the 'Steel City' to major regional hubs, providing a rapid alternative to long-distance road and rail travel. The technical infrastructure at Sonari is uniquely shaped by its urban surroundings and industrial heritage. It features a single asphalt runway (08/26) that measures 1,030 meters (3,380 feet) in length. Due to its relatively short runway, the airport primarily accommodates specialized regional aircraft such as the Grand Caravan 208 operated by IndiaOne Air. To enhance operational safety and sustainability, Tata Steel recently inaugurated a 2.0 MWp solar power project at the airfield, aiming to transition the facility to renewable energy. While the airport is currently limited to small-capacity aircraft, it serves as a critical stop for private corporate jets and government charters supporting the Jamshedpur industrial corridor. Passenger amenities within the Sonari terminal are focused on essential comfort and modern efficiency. The building includes a cozy waiting area, check-in counters, and a selection of small kiosks offering refreshments and local handicrafts. Essential services such as baggage handling with conveyor belts, ATMs, and assistance for differently-abled passengers are well-integrated into the layout. Despite its compact size, the terminal provides a streamlined experience with remarkably short walking distances from the entrance to the boarding area. Its strategic location, just 4.4 kilometers from the city center, ensures that arriving passengers can reach Jamshedpur's major business districts and the Tatanagar Railway Station in about 15 to 20 minutes.
