Aurangabad Airport (IXU), officially known as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport, is a significant international aviation facility serving the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India. Located approximately 5.5 kilometers east of the city center, the airport acts as the primary gateway for international and domestic tourists visiting the world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves. The facility operates from a modern integrated terminal building spanning 190,000 square feet, designed to handle up to 700 passengers during peak hours. The terminal combines contemporary architectural efficiency with local cultural motifs, providing a sophisticated entry point for travelers exploring the historic landmarks of the Marathwada region. The technical infrastructure at Aurangabad is robust, featuring a single asphalt and concrete runway (09/27) that measures 2,835 meters (9,300 feet) in length. This runway is capable of handling medium-sized commercial jet aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 models operated by major carriers like IndiGo and Air India. The airfield is equipped with a modern Instrument Landing System (ILS) and enhanced night landing facilities, ensuring high operational reliability during all seasons. Plans are currently in development to further extend the runway to 3,660 meters and construct a parallel taxiway, which will allow the airport to accommodate large wide-body aircraft and support a significant expansion of international charter routes, particularly during the Hajj pilgrimage season. Passenger amenities within the Aurangabad terminal are world-class and focused on modern convenience. The facility offers a range of retail and duty-free shops, several cafes and restaurants serving both Maharashtrian and international cuisine, and comfortable lounge areas for premium travelers. Essential services such as currency exchange, ATMs, nursing rooms, and 24/7 medical assistance are well-integrated into the terminal layout. The building is outfitted with two aerobridges, 20 check-in counters, and modern baggage handling systems to ensure a streamlined transit experience. Its strategic location near the city center ensures that arriving passengers can reach Aurangabad's major business districts and luxury hotels in about 15 to 20 minutes via a well-organized ground transport network.
