Birsa Munda Airport (IXR), also known as Ranchi Airport, is a significant domestic aviation facility serving the city of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, India. Named after the legendary tribal freedom fighter, the airport acts as a primary link for the state's growing industrial and mining sectors. The facility operates from a modern integrated terminal building inaugurated in 2013, which spans approximately 19,600 square meters. Designed with a focus on contemporary efficiency and local cultural motifs, the terminal is capable of handling up to 700 passengers during peak hours, providing a high-tech and comfortable environment for travelers moving through this resource-rich part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The technical infrastructure at Birsa Munda is robust, featuring a single asphalt runway (13/31) that measures 2,748 meters (9,016 feet) in length. This runway is capable of handling medium-sized commercial jet aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 models operated by major carriers like IndiGo and Air India Express. Plans are currently in place for a significant airfield expansion, including widening the runway strip and extending its length to over 3,600 meters to accommodate larger wide-body aircraft. The facility is equipped with modern landing aids and a dedicated cargo terminal, opened in 2017, which processes over 50 metric tonnes of goods daily, reflecting Ranchi's role as an emerging regional economic hub. Passenger amenities within the Ranchi terminal are world-class and designed for modern convenience. Its strategic location in the Hinoo suburb, just 5 to 7 kilometers south of the city center, ensures that arriving passengers can reach the heart of Ranchi's business and administrative districts in about 20 to 30 minutes via a well-organized transport network.
