Madurai Airport (IXM)

Madurai Airport (IXM) is a major international aviation facility serving the historic temple city of Madurai and the broader Southern Tamil Nadu region in India. Located approximately 12 kilometers from the city center, the airport operates from a modern integrated terminal building that was inaugurated in 2010. Spanning 17,600 square meters, the terminal is designed to handle both domestic and international traffic efficiently, with a capacity to process approximately 500 passengers per hour. The airport's strategic importance is highlighted by its 24/7 customs status, making it a critical hub for trade and tourism in the southern peninsula. The technical infrastructure at Madurai features a single asphalt runway (09/27) measuring 2,285 meters (7,497 feet) in length. This runway is equipped with a Cat-I Instrument Landing System (ILS) and supported by two parallel taxiways, ensuring reliable operations for medium-sized commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Plans are currently in development to extend the runway to over 12,000 feet, which would allow the airport to handle large wide-body aircraft and support a significant expansion of long-haul international routes. The airfield also features seven aircraft parking bays and modern ground handling systems to manage the increasing flight frequency from major carriers like IndiGo and Air India Express. Passenger amenities within the Madurai terminal are comprehensive and cater to both domestic and international travelers. The facility includes a range of retail and duty-free shops, several cafes and restaurants serving traditional Tamil cuisine, and comfortable lounge areas for premium passengers. Essential services such as 36 check-in counters, 20 immigration booths, currency exchange, and multiple ATMs are well-integrated into the terminal layout. Free Wi-Fi is available for travelers, and the building is equipped with specialized assistance for differently-abled and elderly passengers. Its proximity to the city ensures that arriving travelers can reach Madurai's famous Meenakshi Amman Temple and the central business districts in about 30 minutes via a well-organized ground transport network.
