Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI)

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) is Sri Lanka's second-largest international aviation facility, located in the southern district of Hambantota. The airport features a modern and expansive 10,000-square-meter passenger terminal designed to international standards, capable of handling up to one million passengers annually. The terminal architecture is sleek and contemporary, housing 12 check-in counters and two gates equipped with advanced jetways to facilitate wide-body aircraft operations. Inside the terminal, facilities are comprehensive but often operate at limited capacity due to the airport's fluctuating traffic levels. When fully operational, the terminal offers duty-free shops, several cafes serving local and international cuisine, and comfortable lounge areas for business class travelers. The ground floor arrivals area is designed for efficient passenger flow through customs and immigration, featuring two large baggage carousels. Travelers should be aware that some retail and dining services may be closed during off-peak hours, so checking ahead for late-night arrivals is recommended. Navigating the airport is exceptionally easy due to the uncongested and spacious layout of the single terminal. Ground transportation is supported by a large parking area with 400 spaces and local taxi services that connect the airport to Hambantota city center, which is approximately 18 kilometers away. The airfield boasts a 3,500-meter runway (05/23) that is capable of handling the largest commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A380. Its location makes it a strategic gateway for tourists heading to the Yala National Park and the various coastal resorts of southern Sri Lanka.
