Hechi Jinchengjiang Airport (HCJ) is one of China's most remarkable engineering feats, situated atop Jiantang Mountain in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Located approximately 40 kilometers from the city center of Hechi, the airport holds the distinction of being the highest in Guangxi, with an elevation of 677 meters above sea level. Its construction required the leveling of 65 separate hilltops and the filling of 23 deep gullies to create a flat plateau for the single 2,200-meter runway. Often referred to as the "Airport on the Mountain," it offers travelers a breathtaking and somewhat surreal experience as the aircraft appears to land on a narrow strip of land suspended above the surrounding peaks. The airport operates from a single passenger terminal that spans 4,200 square meters and efficiently manages both domestic arrivals and departures. The layout is designed for maximum functionality, featuring a central check-in area with four counters and a security screening zone that leads to a comfortable 600-square-meter waiting lounge. Because of the airport's unique topography and the precision required for flight operations, only captain-level pilots are authorized to perform landings here. The terminal's compact design ensures that navigation is incredibly simple, with all facilities, including seven VIP lounges and an information desk, located within a short walking distance. Facilities at Hechi Jinchengjiang are surprisingly comprehensive for its remote mountain location. The terminal includes a unique two-story restaurant villa with an outdoor terrace and garden, providing seating for 100 people and offering panoramic views of the karst mountain landscape. Unusually for an airport, it also features on-site sports facilities, including basketball and badminton courts for staff and visitors. Essential services such as drinking water dispensers, a designated smoking area, and digital flight information systems ensure a comfortable stay. While there are no extensive retail shops, the information desk provides assistance with baggage packing and travel insurance, catering to the needs of both adventure tourists and regional business travelers.
