Giyani Airport (GIY) is a small aviation facility located in the town of Giyani, within the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Originally serving as a key transportation hub for the former Gazankulu Homeland, the airport has a rich history tied to the region's political past. The airfield features a single runway and is situated just a short distance from the town center, which remains an important administrative and commercial hub for the surrounding Mopani District Municipality. The terminal facilities at Giyani Airport are currently minimalist and reflect its largely non-operational status. While the airport is technically operational, it has seen very little activity for over three decades since the transition to a unified South Africa. Recent plans to revitalize and reopen the facility for commercial use have been proposed by the local government, though progress has been slow due to legal and infrastructure challenges. Ground transportation from Giyani Airport is limited, as there are no formal taxi or shuttle services based at the airfield. The town of Giyani is nearby and offers a range of services and road connections to the rest of the province, including proximity to the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park. Visitors to the area are advised to be self-sufficient and to arrange their own transportation and provisions. Despite its current state of disuse, Giyani Airport remains an important potential asset for the region's future connectivity and economic development.
