Garissa Airport (GAS)

Garissa Airport (GAS) is a vital regional aviation facility located in northeastern Kenya, serving the city of Garissa and the surrounding frontier region near the Somali border. The airport currently operates with a 1,200-meter asphalt runway and serves as a critical hub for domestic flights, government administrative travel, and humanitarian missions. It is undergoing a major modernization project, with a new terminal building scheduled for completion in early 2026, which is expected to significantly enhance its capacity and facilities, including expanded parking and improved passenger services.

The existing terminal at Garissa is a single-story structure that houses both arrival and departure areas in a compact layout. Facilities are currently basic, with minimal amenities such as small kiosks for snacks and beverages rather than full-service restaurants. Security procedures are stringent due to the airport's strategic location, and travelers should expect a streamlined experience focused on essential flight processing. Once the new terminal is operational, it will introduce modern features such as a VIP lounge, prayer rooms, and dedicated shopping areas, reflecting the growing importance of Garissa as a regional academic and administrative center.

Ground transportation to and from the airport is primarily facilitated by local taxis and private vehicle transfers, with the city center of Garissa located only a short 10-minute drive away. Most commercial flights from GAS connect to Nairobi, often arriving at Wilson Airport (WIL). Travelers planning international connections from Nairobi should allow at least 4-5 hours to transfer from Wilson to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) due to potential urban traffic. As a single-terminal facility, there are currently no inter-terminal transfers at Garissa, and all transitions between regional and charter flights occur within the same building.
