El Encanto Airport (ECO)

El Encanto Airport (ECO) is a remote domestic airstrip located in the Amazonas Department of southern Colombia, situated along the Caraparaná River. The facility features a single unpaved runway and serves as a vital logistical link for the municipality of El Encanto, where the majority of the population belongs to the Huitoto indigenous group. Due to the dense Amazonian jungle surrounding the area, the airport provides an essential alternative to the lengthy and often difficult river transport required to reach larger settlements. The terminal infrastructure at El Encanto is extremely rudimentary and designed for basic community and military needs. There is no formal passenger building; instead, essential services are conducted from a small administrative shelter near the airfield. Amenities are virtually non-existent, with no retail shops, public dining facilities, or ATMs available. The airport primarily supports government supply missions, medical evacuations, and occasional private charter flights. Travelers arriving here should be fully prepared for a self-sufficient experience and should coordinate their arrival with local community leaders or mission organizations. There are currently no regular scheduled commercial airline services operating at El Encanto Airport. Air traffic is predominantly composed of Colombian Air Force (FAC) logistics flights and specialized charters using STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) aircraft. Ground transportation is extremely limited, primarily consisting of local motorcycles or small river boats (peque-peques) for onward travel to nearby indigenous communities.
