Umaru Musa Yar'adua Airport (DKA), commonly known as Katsina Airport, is a significant regional facility serving the state capital of Katsina in northern Nigeria. The airport features a single, relatively compact terminal building that handles both domestic arrivals and departures. Its architecture is notable for blending modern functional design with traditional local motifs, often compared to the style of the historic Emirs' palaces in the region. While primarily functioning as a domestic airport with services to major hubs like Abuja and Lagos, Katsina Airport is designated as an international airport during the Hajj season. During this period, the facility operates 24 hours a day to facilitate direct flights to the Middle East, specifically for pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia. This seasonal international status avoids the necessity for local travelers to transit through Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. Terminal amenities are basic but sufficient for current traffic levels, including check-in counters, small kiosks, and cafes offering light refreshments. There are also a few shops selling newspapers, magazines, and local souvenirs. Transportation to and from the airport is mainly provided by taxis and private car hires, with the drive to Katsina city center taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Several recent upgrades, including runway extensions, have enabled the airport to accommodate larger aircraft for its seasonal international operations.
